Dormie

Golf & Country Club

A private members' club · Founded 1921

The course keeps the score.

Eighteen holes cut into chalk downland — bentgrass greens, fescue rough, and a card that has settled arguments since 1921.

03The course

Eighteen holes on the downs.

Laid out in 1921 and barely touched since — the routing walks out along the beck, climbs to High Fescue, and brings every match home past the clubhouse windows.

04Membership

Four categories. Stated in full.

Most clubs mumble about money. We print it — the joining fee, the year's dues, and the honest state of the list.

  • Seven-day golf, no green fees
  • Full privileges of the house
  • Locker and trolley store
  • The vote at the annual meeting
  • Fourteen reciprocal clubs

The waiting list is real — about fourteen months at present. Every candidate is proposed and seconded by members of five years' standing.

  • Seven-day golf, no green fees
  • Full privileges of the house
  • Academy coaching at the junior rate
  • Converts to Full at 35 — joining fee credited

The committee holds forty places in this category and defends them at every meeting.

  • The dining room, bar and terrace
  • The pool, May to September
  • Six racquets sessions a season
  • Every fixture in the diary

Golf by invitation of a playing member, four rounds a season. Many never take the fifth.

  • The academy, Saturday mornings
  • Holiday camps, spring and summer
  • The course after three o'clock
  • Range balls, without limit

No joining fee, and a parent need not be a member. Ability decides, and always has.

Figures for the 2026 season, inclusive of VAT and the course levy. No debentures, no entrance ballot fee, no hidden subscriptions. Reviewed each April and printed here first.

The house

More than the golf.

The modern club lives well beyond the eighteenth green. Five rooms of the place, each with its own weather — and a waiting list of its own.

The diary

The year has fixtures.

The diary is the club — golf is merely its excuse.

08The racquets & the juniors

The next fifty years are already practising.

The racquets pavilion went up in 2024 and was full by June — padel on Thursdays, grass courts for the summer eights, and a ladder nobody will admit to checking twice a day. The junior academy has a room of its own, a door to the practice ground, and first claim on Saturday mornings.

A club that only plays golf is a museum with a bar. This one is noisier, younger, and better for it — the waiting list says so.

Membership is by application.

Every candidate is proposed and seconded by members of five years' standing. If golf brought you here alone, the secretary will gladly make the introductions — that is half her art.
